Preventative
Beautiful smiles are built on a foundation of healthy gums. Regular dental cleaning appointments, in addition to good home care, helps to remove plaque and tartar deposits that can cause gum disease and tooth decay. Our dental hygienist together with Dr. Hastings will assess your current gum health and recommend dental cleanings at 3, 4 or 6 month intervals to optimize your dental health.
Periodontal (gum) disease can occur at any age, but it is most common among adults. If detected in its early stages, gum disease can be reversed - so you need to see a dental professional if you notice any of the following symptoms:
- Gums that are red, puffy or swollen, or tender
- Gums that bleed during brushing or flossing
- Teeth that look longer because your gums have receded
- Gums that have separated from your teeth, creating a pocket
- Constant bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth
Your dentist and dental hygienist will work with you to come up with a home care plan as well as professional treatments to progressively improve your gum health.
- Brush to remove food particles and plaque from your teeth, to stimulate your gums, and to clean your tongue. At a minimum, it is recommended to brush twice a day.
- Your brush cannot reach about 1/3 of your tooth surface. Floss to remove food particles from between your teeth, plaque from above and below your gumline, and to prevent tartar buildup. Flossing doesn’t have to be done before bed. Pick a time in your day that works for you and stick with it. The goal is to floss as frequently as is needed to prevent your gums from bleeding.
- Maintain in-office dental cleanings at intervals recommended by the hygienist and dentist.
